My biggest hack to getting results from young children between the ages of 4-11 developing their skills from an individual setting to a game/team game setting and I'm going to let you know how!
"3 KEY WORDS"
When coaching I use 3 key words consistently and keep them the same for all ages. This is a simple but effect way to keep checking in with a large class and also allowing the children to self reflect when In a fast game/team game setting.
What are "3 KEY WORDS"
So it is as simple as it sounds. Whenever teaching a new skill when they're 4-6 years old I have 3 words I say for everything that describes the movement or exercise to help the children remember the technique they're learning but also differentiate them with other techniques.
Here are a few examples:
Overarm throw: "Ear, Back Throw"
Underarm throw: "Hip, Back, Throw"
Chest pass: "Chest, Turn, Push"
Rolling: "Bend, Back, Point"
Why does this help older children to?
When starting to develop faster games or team setting games the children are expected to perform the skills they learnt when they where younger very quickly and sometimes this can be ALOT to think about and coaches struggle to understand why. It is simple: We give them to much to think about too soon and expect the world.
However we can reduce the amount to think about by teaching the "3 key words" to each skill when they're in their younger ages (4-6 years). This then helps them transition to team games and faster games easier as they now only have to think about 3 words to ensure the technique is executed correctly meaning they cna focus on the rules more. This also allows more time for you as a coach to correct and develop new skills such as "find space" or defensive techniques"
