Are you struggling to organise and plan an effective schools gymnastics session?
I'm going to go over a template we use to help you become a gymnastics planning pro!
Step 1:
Split the sport into 4 different core skills (eg. rolling, jumping & landing, developing a handstand, balancing & body control).
We have found if you have to many focuses in a single half term the children's ability to hold this information until the next time they complete a half term of that sport they struggle to move through it smoothly and safely.
Step 2:
Using the 4 core skills you are looking to work on in the half term decide certain skills you would like to achieve that cover this by the end of their 6 weeks (eg. when doing rolling I would like all children in Year 1 to be able to complete a Forwards Roll supported on on their own by the end of the 6 week block).
Step 3:
Now you get into the nitty gritting of planning which we love doing at HSSS!
Each individual session is going to have a "Warm Up & Preparation", "Retrieval & Develop" & a "Build" Section. There
Here is what each section means:
Warm Up & Preparation: Use a combination of new and old jumps to warm the group up as this helps to raise the heart rate. Don't think of the warm up as a "we have to do it". Use it as a time of learning also so don;t neglect the technique side.
Retrieval & Develop: In this section of your session (in my eyes the most imortant) you can use this to refresh pupils techniques from previous sessions as well as teach new key words and movements relevent to the new skills they're going to complete in the "Build" section of the session.
Build: Now onto the fun stuff! You are now going to decide 4 skills to work on based on each core skill decided in "Step 2:". Put these skills in 4 seperate line of mats and split the group into 4 teams. Sit the teams behind the mats and take it in turn doing these skills.
We are going to do:
- Rolling: Forwards rolls supported focusing on the children placing the backs of their heads on the floor
- Jumping & Landing: Tuck jumps inside of hoops with the focus on lifting knees as high as they can and landing in the correct shape learnt in the "Retrieval and Develop" section of the session.
- Developing Handstands: In this we shall do bunny hops on mats. This is to help pupils focus on transferring weight from their feet to their hands.
- Balancing & Body Control: In this we shall do bear crawl backwards or forwards. This helps the pupils develop strength in their shoulders and develop their dynamic balancing.
Step 4:
Now you have planned your first week you now need to think how to you can develop these skills week by week.
Here is an example: When moving on to the "Build section" Think about how to make the skills in the lines harder (eg when doing bear crawls forwards or backwards you could spread cones along the mats theat they should not touch as they move around the mats. Or instead of them doing tuck jumps in hoops they now move onto doing tuck jumps off a bench.
